SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Villanova 9-6 on Sunday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B to finish its first series sweep of the 2024 season.
The Cardinals fell in an early 4-0 deficit after the top of the first. However, UIW responded by putting up four runs in the home half of the first to tie the game at 4-4 after one. Rob Liddington Jr. and Rey Mendoza recorded RBI doubles and Dalton Beck tied the game with a two-run homer.
The Cardinals took its first lead in the third on a Tony DeJesus two-run single, bringing the score to 6-4 after three.
Luca Boscarino doubled in a run in the fifth to extend UIW's lead to 7-4.
Villanova added a run in the seventh to bring the score to 7-5.
In the eighth, pinch-hitter Sterling Sutcliffe crushed a two-run homer over the right field wall to widen the Cardinals lead to 9-5.
The Wildcats added a run in the ninth to bring the final score to 9-6.
UIW heads to College Station to take on No. 8 Texas A&M on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
