SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Villanova 7-6 on Saturday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B to clinch the first series of the 2024 season.
The Cardinals went down early in the first, falling in a 3-0 deficit after one.
UIW put up two runs in the second on a two-run single by Cameron Caley, bringing the score to 3-2.
The Wildcats added a run in the third, but the Cardinals put up three to go up 5-4.
Villanova tied the game up at 5-5 in the fourth on a solo home run.
After two scoreless innings, the Wildcats took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh.
The Cardinals responded by putting up the go-ahead run in the home half of the eighth on a two-run single by Rob Liddington Jr.
Dave Johnson closed the door on Villanova to secure the 7-6 win for UIW.
The Cardinals look to close out the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
