SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team earned its first Southland Conference win of the season taking down the East Texas A&M University Lions 65-53 on Saturday afternoon.
Davion Bailey led the team in scoring once again with 19 points, 14 of those coming in the first half.
Dylan Hayman was the only other Cardinal to score in double-figures with 11,
Jalin Anderson added nine of his own.
The Cardinals started this game off fast, shooting 51 percent in the first half. Seven different UIW players scored, and they were led by
Davion Bailey who had 14 in the first 20 minutes. The Cardinals didn't only get it done on offense but were lock down defensively. The Lions wouldn't convert on a field goal until nearly seven minutes into the game. UIW forced nine turnovers and sent away two shots in the first half. Along with this the Cardinals out rebounded ETAMU 12 to three on that end of the court. At halftime it was all UIW, 39-25.
The Cardinals continued to find the bottom of the basket in the first few minutes of the game scoring eight unanswered points, getting back to the basics only scoring in the paint and from the charity stripe. The Lions went on a run of their own, getting the once 17-point lead down to just five with eight minutes remaining. UIW remained solid on the fundamentals only scoring in the paint and off free throws through the rest of the game.
Despite being outscored 28-26 in the half the Cardinals still earned a double-digit win, 65-53, on Saturday.
