SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team picked up a Saturday afternoon win, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, against East Texas A&M at the McDermott Center. The win clinched a spot for the Cardinals in this year's Southland Conference Tournament, taking place in Hammond, Louisiana.
The Cardinals (16-8, 9-5) win today game UIW the program's most wins in a season (16) and the most wins in conference (9) in program history. Last season UIW broke the program's most wins mark under first-year head coach Gabryel Ording, only for her to break it again in her second season.
Risa Sena led the team in kills with 17. Calissa Allison recorded her tenth triple-double of the season with 13 kills, 13 assists, and 12 digs.
Kade Thomas, the Cardinals leader in blocks, recorded four blocks to bring her season total to 93.
Senior setter, Anuhea Faitau led the Cardinals in assists with 24.
The reigning Southland Conference defensive player of the week, Audrey Patton, led the team in digs with 25 on the afternoon.
Set 1: UIW 25 (1), ETAMU 21 (0)
After trailing by two early in the set, the Cardinals went on a run and led by as many as seven. ETAMU made a comeback, but UIW was able to hold them off to take the set. Sena led all players in kills with five.
Set 2: UIW 25 (2), ETAMU 19 (2)
The Lions recorded the first point of set two to take the lead, but the Cardinals used a 6-0 run to pull ahead. UIW never trailed in the set again en route to taking a 2-0 set lead. Sena once again led all players in kills with six.
Set 3: UIW 23 (2), ETAMU 25 (1)
After going down 17-12, the Lions tied things up at 19-19 before pulling ahead to take the set.
Set 4: UIW 25 (3), ETAMU 22 (1)
Set four was tightly contested until the Cardinals pulled ahead by three late in the set. The Lions made things interesting by pulling within two, but the Cardinals were able to shut the door to seal the deal on a record-setting day.
The Cardinals close out the regular season on the road with two road matchups in south Texas. UIW will take on UTRGV on Thursday before heading to Corpus Christi to visit the Islanders on Saturday.
