SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team proved to be a threat from the 3-point line on Monday night as the Cardinals shot 50 percent (10-20) from beyond the arch to defeat Prairie View A&M, 68-49.
Myra Bell shot lights out, going 4-for-5 on 3-pointers for the night, totaling 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Cardinals. Bell and
Jorja Elliott forced the Panthers into tight close outs as Elliott added 17 points on 7-for-14 from the field, including three 3-pointers of her own to go along with seven rebounds.
Elliott had the hot hand early for the Cardinals with back-to-back threes to tie the game and take the lead at 7-4. Bell was the next to heat up from beyond the arch, separating the Cardinals from the Panthers, 10-4. UIW carried this momentum until the end of the first for a five-point edge at 16-11.
By the end of the first half, the Cardinals shot 6-for-12 from 3-pointers following an impressive display of back-to-back-to-back treys from Bell, Elliott and
Destiny Whitaker as UIW pulled ahead 30-22 at halftime.
The Cardinals carried this momentum into the second half, with Bell going on a quick 5-0 run to start the third quarter. UIW found its rhythm in the inside-out game as the team continued to drain three's while forcing the Panthers to collapse inside. By the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals saw an 11-point lead, 49-38, over PVAMU.
UIW continued to apply pressure in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 19-11 for the 68-49 victory to secure the 3-0 record at the McDermott Center.
