SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team took down the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 92-64 in its final home game of the month Saturday afternoon.
While the Cardinals led for most of the first 20 minutes, the first half was a tightly contested battle. The usual suspects gave the Cardinals the edge as Jalin Anderson and Jordan Pyke doing the bulk of the scoring in the first few minutes of the game with eight and nine points respectively.
Five players scored in double figures for the Cardinals. Dylan Hayman led the way with 18, Davion Bailey and Jordan Pyke both had 17, Jayden Williams had 14, and Jalin Anderson scored 13. Anderson also shared the love racking up 10 assists on the day for his first double-double of the season.
The key to the half was 3-point shooting. The Golden Lions deep shooting helped them stick around early. However, with just under 10 minutes to go in the half the Cardinals knocked down their first 3-pointers of the game. UIW caught fire making its next four shots from beyond the arch and extending the lead to its largest at 31-21.
UAPB slowly chipped away at the lead in the final minutes, closing on a 15-8 scoring run sending the teams into the locker room with a 39-36 halftime score.
UIW completely took over the game in the second half. Shooting better than 65 percent from the field and out rebounding the opponent 12 to seven the Cardinals found themselves with a 19-point lead with just over seven minutes to play. UIW would only continue to grow their lead through the end of the game as nine Cardinals found a way to put the ball in the basket and UIW walked away with 92-64.
