SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team earned an 84-81 win over the Prairie View A&M University Panthers on Tuesday night in the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals started fast and efficient. Two players
Jordan Pyke (4-4) and
Jayden Williams (3-3) led the way as UIW shot 71 percent from the field. The steady shooting helped the Cards get out to a 24-18 lead halfway through. The Cardinals cooled down, only making two field goals in the final 10 minutes. However, UIW was able to earn 14 free-throws in that time. After converting 11 of 14 from the charity stripe the Cardinals extended their lead to 10 heading into the locker room.
Out of the beak the Panthers doubled up the score with some big three-point shots. The Cardinals continued to find their way to the free-throw line getting into the bonus with more than 10 minutes remaining in the game. This paired with two six-point runs by
Jalin Anderson and
Dylan Hayman kept UIW in the lead despite the margin closing.
With 28 fouls called in the half it was difficult for either team to pull away down the stretch. Anderson and Hayman made their mark, scoring 12 each in the half, downing key baskets to keep the Cardinals in the lead. In the end UIW prevailed with an 84-81 win in the nest.
