SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team lost in straight sets to UTRGV in its home opener, 22-25, 18-25, 24-26 at the McDermott Center on Thursday.
The Cardinals (7-6, 0-3) dropped its third conference match of the season to open conference play.
Set 1: UIW 22 (0), UTRGV 25 (1)
The first set was as back-and-forth as it gets. Late in the set the Cardinals held a 21-18 lead, before the Vaqueros went on a 5-0 run to pull away at the end.
Set 2: UIW 18 (0), UTRGV 25 (2)
UTRGV controlled set two 18 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Finley Evans recorded three kills for the Cardinals, while Teyhlor Thomas tallied two blocks in the set.
Set 3: UIW 24 (0), UTRGV 26 (3)
The third set was a roller coaster, that consisted of 13 ties and six lead changes. After tying the match up at 24-24 the Vaqueros were able to finish off the match with the final two points.
UIW remains at home for a Saturday afternoon matchup, at 1:00 p.m. against Northwestern State at the McDermott Center.
