BEAUMONT, Texas – A scoring drought late in the game for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team led to a 70-53 loss against Lamar University Thursday night.
 
Destiny Terrell paced the Cardinals with 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists, and two blocks on the night. Aliyah Collins added 12 points and two assists.
 
UIW showed why the team is nationally ranked for scoring defense, swarming Lamar in the first half and holding leading scorer Akasha Davis to just four points. Holding LU to 14 in the first quarter, free throws (7-for-8) pushed the Cardinals ahead to end the first, 17-14, with Chloe Storer and Raimi McCrary heading to the line after attacking the paint hard.
 
The second proved to be a solid quarter for the Cardinal offense with the team ending the half shooting 40 percent from the field behind eight points, five rebounds, and two blocks from Terrell. UIW outscored Lamar 10-4 on second-chance points and 16-14 in the paint, while forcing LU into eight turnovers to UIW's four in the first half to maintain a 35-27 lead.
 
A timeout was called by head coach Jeff Dow with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter as Lamar crept within four points (48-44) during a UIW scoring drought. LU nailed a jumper to end the quarter down two points, keeping a tight game heading into the final ten minutes (50-48).
 
The momentum shifted in the fourth quarter to Lamar as LU took a 59-50 lead with UIW's field goal drought spanning from two minutes left in the third until the end of the game.
