Commerce, Texas – A 28-point third quarter allowed the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team to break away from Texas A&M – Commerce, leading to a 70-62 victory and the first Southland Conference win of the season.
Aliyah Collins had herself a night, scoring 19 points in the second half alone for a total of 21 points on the game.
Destiny Terrell (14) and
Nina De Leon Negron (12) added valuable points for the Cardinal offense while cleaning up the boards with 17 rebounds between the pair.
The Cardinals began the game with one of their strongest offensive starts this season. Terrell proved to be an offensive spark, scoring eight of UIW's 21 first-quarter points as the Cardinals held onto a one-point lead heading into the second quarter (21-20).
Both the Cardinals and the Lions slowed down in the second, each scoring just over 10 points in the quarter to bring the score to 33-32 at the half with Texas A&M – Commerce taking the lead.
A crucial 28-point third quarter from the Cardinals set the tone for the remainder of the game, showcasing scoring ability from several players on the floor. The largest lead of the game came in the third as UIW separated themselves from Commerce by 14 points (60-46).
Collins kept UIW's advantage alive in the fourth, scoring all 10 of the Cardinals' points with the Lions on their heels. With under a minute to go in the game, Commerce came within three (65-62) but a pair of free throws from Collins stopped the Lions' momentum and led to a 70-62 victory for the Cardinals.
