Baseball Drops Game One, Wins Wild Game Two on a Walk-Off

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team split its doubleheader on Friday against the University of New Orleans. The Cardinals would drop game one 12-1, but walk it off in game two to win 11-10 at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.

Game 1

Jimmy De Leon and Grant Randall each recorded two hits to lead the Cardinals offensively. Randall drove in the Cardinal's lone run.

The Privateers took an early 3-0 lead on a three-run homer in the top of the first.

UNO extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the second on a two-run homer. Later in the inning, the Cardinals got on the board, driving in a run on an RBI single by Randall.

The Privateers extended their lead to 7-1 on their second two-run homer of the afternoon in the third.

UNO took a 9-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run homer before the Privateers drove in three runs in the sixth to take a 12-1 lead and win game one.

Game 2

De Leon and Warren Laster led the Cardinals in hits with three in the come-from-behind win. Laster also drove in five runs, including the tying and game-winning runs.

The Privateers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double and RBI triple.

De Leon got the Cardinals on the board in the second on a solo home run to bring the score to 2-1.

Rey Mendoza would crush a two-run homer in the third to give the Cardinals their first lead, 3-2. The two RBIs helped Mendoza etch his name in Cardinal history for the most in a single season.

The Privateers would pull back ahead in the fourth after they scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead.

After a scoreless inning, the Privateers would drive in two more runs on a two-run homer to extend their lead to 8-3 in the sixth. Later in the inning, the Cardinals tied the game up at 8-8, scoring five runs with two outs.

UNO would quickly retake the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run single, bringing the score to 10-8. Later in the inning, Laster drove in a run to pull the Cardinals within one, 10-9.
