Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Nicholls

THIBODAUX – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated Nicholls, 9-8, in game one and lost 8-1 in game two of the doubleheader on Thursday. 

Game One: UIW 9, Nicholls 8 

Four Cardinals tallied four hits each to lead the team. Hernan Yanez led the team in RBIs, finishing with four. 

The Colonels took an early lead in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead.  

After a short rain delay, Warren Laster got the Cardinals on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-1. Later in the inning, Nicholls scored on a groundout to extend the lead to 4-1. 

UIW tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the third. Yanez got the scoring started with an RBI single through the left side. Jimmy De Leon later doubled down the third base line to drive in one. Cameron Crotte tied the game up on an RBI single up the middle.    

After two scoreless innings, the Colonels retook the lead at 8-4 following a two-run single and triple.  

The Cardinals pulled within one in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 8-7. Alec Carr drove in the inning's first run on a groundout. Yanez and Crotte both picked up RBI singles to end the inning. 

Yanez drove in two runs on a single up the middle in the top of the eighth to give the Cardinals their first lead at 9-8. 

Nicholls failed to score in the eighth and ninth to drop game one of the three-game series. 

Game 2: Nicholls 8, UIW 1

Crotte and Sterling Sutcliffe led the Cardinals in hits with two each in the loss. Coming in as a pinch hitter, Sutcliffe picked up the Cardinals' lone RBI of the game.  

The Colonels took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A two-run homer and an RBI single gave the Colonels the early lead. 

An RBI double in the bottom of the second extended Nicholls' lead to 4-0.  

After a scoreless third, the Colonels used two RBI doubles to take a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning.  

A two-run single in the fifth gave Nicholls an 8-0 cushion.  

After a scoreless sixth, Sutcliffe drove a solo home run over the right-center field wall to bring the score to 8-1. 

The game would remain scoreless the rest of the way.
