LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team kept the contest close until the second half against Texas Tech University on Wednesday morning. The Cardinals fought hard but lost 76-35 to the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders scored immediately after the tip on a 3-pointer but were held scoreless for the next five minutes as UIW went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead midway through the quarter. The Lady Raiders found their footing, ending the first on an 8-0 run of their own and a 13-9 advantage. Both offenses were fueled by turnovers as each team committed eight turnovers in the first, with all nine of UIW's points coming off TTU mistakes.
TTU jumped out to an 11-point lead, which was cut to four (20-16) on a seven-point run after a quick three from
Hanna Wheeler, a layup from
Destiny Terrell, and a steal and layup from
Nina De Leon Negron. The Lady Raiders then doubled down, regaining the 11-point advantage to head into the locker room at 29-18.
The Cardinals had their largest scoring quarter in the third with 12 points but could not hold the Lady Raiders as they outscored UIW with 29 and went on to win the contest 76-35.
