SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) 67-57 in a Sunday afternoon matchup at the McDermott Center behind balanced team scoring.
Jorja Elliott went 6-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc to lead the Cardinals with 14 points, while pulling down five rebounds.
Destiny Terrell neared a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and
Myra Bell finished with 11 points.
Nina De Leon Negron added seven rebounds and five assists.
The Vaqueros started the game on a 7-2 run but a three from Bell and a layup from Terrell put the Cardinals right back in the game at 9-7 for the first media timeout. Terrell picked up a quick layout out of the timeout followed by an elbow jumper from
Kaylee Howell to hand UIW its first lead of the game. UTRGV tied the game up with a minute left in the quarter but a Howell 3-point play off her own offensive rebound followed by a put-back through contact kept the Cardinals ahead 17-16 to end the first.
With four minutes to go in the half, UIW separated themselves from UTRGV by 10 points. The Vaqueros didn't score the last 3:25 of the second as the Cardinals claimed a 15-point lead heading into the half (38-23).
UTRGV came out the break outscoring UIW 7-0 start the third quarter before the Cardinals called a timeout. The Vaqueros went on to win the third 22-10 and pull within three at the end of the quarter (48-45).
The fourth was a battle between the Cardinals and Vaqueros, but UIW was able to maintain its lead, securing a 10-point victory over UTRGV.
