SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team defeated Nicholls University, 3-0, on Friday, October 6, and lost to Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) 1-0 on Sunday, October 8. Both games were played at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
Game 1: UIW 3, Nicholls 0
Brianna Mata got the scoring started early, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute to give UIW a 1-0 lead.
In the 36th minute, Zara Dominguez added to the Cardinals lead with a beautiful shot to bring the score to 2-0.
After a quiet second half Sierra Wannamaker converted a penalty shot in the 89th minute to extend the Cardinals lead to 3-0.
Goalkeeper Erica Defferding recorded her second shutout, finishing the game with four saves in the win.
Game 2: UIW 0, SLU 1
Neither team was able to get anything going offensively in the first half as the score was 0-0 at halftime.
In the 62nd minute SLU was awarded a corner kick and the Lady Lions were able to convert the corner kick to bring the score to 1-0.
Defferding finished the game with four saves in the loss.
