Football Knocks off Lamar from atop the SLC Standings

BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word football team continues its undefeated run in Southland Conference play, knocking off Lamar University (3-1) from the top of the standings with a 17-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Quarterback Richard Torres played a complete game for UIW, totaling two touchdowns for 307 passing yards. Brandon Porter once again finished the night with 100-plus receiving yards (101) to go along with his one touchdown. Linebackers Ricky Rich (12) and Tylan Foster (9) led the Cardinal defense in tackles. With a sack assist on the game, Steven Parker moves into first place in the career record book with 13.0 sacks in the last two seasons.

UIW's first chance to score was shut down by Lamar's defense. The Cardinals were held to a 22-yard field goal after finding the red zone on their first drive which was blocked by Lamar's linebacker, Jalen Freeman to keep the score at zero.

Mister Williams took down Lamar's quarterback on their third down on the ensuing drive, forcing LU to punt. The ball dropped at the 35-yard line, setting UIW up for a 24-yard touchdown pass from Torres to Porter (7-0).

Lamar scored 10 seconds later on a trick play, leaking out past UIW's back line and ending a 75-yard haul to the end zone to even the score at seven.

Just 20 seconds into the second quarter, Torres found Dalton Meyer who dodged two LU players trying to bring him down before finding the end zone to give UIW a 14-7 lead.

Ronald Wilson picked off Lamar at the 35-yard line, however, the Cardinals were not able to capitalize as Lamar stopped them in their tracks at the 43-yard line.

With under two minutes to go in the first half, LU had a look to score but Tre Richardson dove, forcing a fumble on the two-yard line, resulting in a touchback.

Both teams failed to score early in the fourth. Lamar had a chance to strike to start the quarter, but Parker stopped LU at fourth-and-nine before UIW missed a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead.

Mason Lawler sealed the win on a field goal with two minutes to go in the game (17-7).
