SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team fell in its final home game of the season to the Nicholls State University Colonels 45-32 on Saturday night.
The first quarter belonged to the Cardinals. On the opening drive of the game,
Zach Calzada threw a 43-yard bomb to
Brandon Porter down the sideline to the Nicholls three-yard line. The UIW drive stalled, and they were forced to kick a field goal, going up 3-0. Both defenses stood tough not allowing any points. That was until late in the quarter when Calzada was able to once again find Porter, this time in the endzone, putting the Cards up 10-0.
In the second quarter the Colonels went on to take the lead and score 24 unanswered points. At the end of the half,
Mason Lawler drilled a 51-yard field goal, the longest of his career, to cut the lead to 24-13 going into the break.
On the Cardinal offensive drive of the second half, the Colonels forced a fumble and returned it for six, extending their lead to 18 (31-13).
The Nicholls defense made another stop and gave the ball back to the offense. Collin Guggenheim was able to march the Colonels down the field once again scoring his fourth touchdown of the game putting Nicholls up, 38-13.
From there the teams traded touchdown drives until the Cardinals defense came up with a big turnover, forcing a Guggenheim to fumble, giving UIW great field position at the 47.
The Cardinals were able to capitalize, finding the endzone on a Calazda pass to
Jaelin Campbell bringing the score to 45-32.
Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the game and Cardinals fell by a final score of 45-32.
