SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team defeated McNeese State University, 2-0, on Friday, October 20. On Sunday, October 22, the Cardinals played to a 1-1 draw against Texas A&M Commerce.
Game 1: UIW 2, McNeese 0
The Cardinals controlled possession for most of the game and were rewarded late in the second half with two late goals.
After a foul in the box, Sinead Duffy converted a penalty to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute. In the 89th minute, senior forward Sierra Wannamaker scored to close out the game on senior night.
Goalkeeper Erica Defferding allowed no goals and finished with eight saves in the win.
Game 2: UIW 1, TAMUC 1
UIW wasted no time getting on the board as they took a 1-0 in the 32nd minute. Brianna Mata found the back of the net with a header, Wannamaker and Melissa Bailey assisted.
The Lions tied the game up at 1-1 in the 36th minute.
Defferding allowed one goal while facing 13 shots and finished with six saves in the draw.
The Cardinals will square off against Houston Christian University in the final regular season game of the season on Friday, October 27 in Houston.
