Football to Host Southland Conference Foe McNeese

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is back at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium for a Southland Conference matchup against McNeese State University at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. This game is an official Alamo Heights Centennial Celebration event.

UIW
  • The Cardinals are looking to secure the first Southland Conference win of the season.
  • UIW is sitting at No. 11 in the Stats Perform FCS Poll and No. 12 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
  • The Cardinal offense is ranked second in the nation in passing yards per game (375.5) and third in team passing efficiency (197.79).
  • UIW is third in the nation for points per game, averaging 46.2, and for total offense with 539.8 yards per game.
 
SCOUTING THE COWBOYS
  • McNeese was picked to finish fourth in the 2022 Southland Preseason Poll. This matchup will be the Cowboy's first league game this season.
  • The Cowboys are 1-3 on the season, coming off a 32-17 victory over Mississippi College. Head coach Gary Goff is in his first season with the Cowboys.
  • D'angelo Durham has recorded three touchdowns on the ground this season with 85 yards per game. Deonta McMahon is putting up 101.5 yards per game with two touchdowns on the season.
  • Quarterback Knox Kadum is 43-83-6 on the season with three touchdowns for 516 yards.
  • Wide receivers Mason Pierce (1), Josh Matthews (1), and Kameran Senegal (1) have each recorded a touchdown for the Cowboys.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • McNeese leads the all-time series, 5-3.
  • Last season, UIW shut out the Cowboys 31-0 in San Antonio, while the Cowboys secured a 28-20 victory in Lake Charles.
 
UIW PLAYERS TO WATCH
  • Lindsey Scott Jr. commands the Cardinal offense, ranking second in the nation in passing yards per game (357.8) and passing efficiency (200.0). Scott has accumulated 1,431 passing yards so far this season.
  • After an impressive 262 yards at Nevada, Darion Chafin continues to put up numbers as he ranks third in the nation for receiving yards per game (107) and in receiving touchdowns with five.
  • Kelechi Anyalebechi is tied for first in the SLC for solo tackles per game (7.0). He's two total tackles away from breaking UIW's career tackles record.
  • Chris Whittaker is averaging 1.88 sacks per game, a major contributor to the Cardinal's 11 tackles for loss per game.
