THE LAST TIME THEY MET

Texas A&M Commerce (UIW 0-3)

The Lions left the Lone Star Conference to join the Southland Conference this past summer to start their Division I journey. This game will mark the first Southland Conference matchup between the two.

Lamar (UIW 3-1; 25-12, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21)

In the last meeting between the two Cardinal teams, UIW took the highly competitive match in four sets.

After winning the first two sets by more than five points each, UIW was challenged in the third. Lamar held onto an early lead, 21-13, but the Cardinals came back to go on a 6-1 run. The Beaumont Cardinals ultimately won the set 25-20.

To close out the game, UIW won 25-21 but was not let off easily. The Cardinals led for most of the game, but Lamar stayed steadily close behind. The Beaumont Cardinals returned within three points as the score was 24-21. Though, a huge block from Allison Palmi and former UIW middle blocker, Taylor Henderson, capped off the win for the Cardinals.

Annamarie Alvarez contributed six kills and a notable six blocks for the win. Palmi finished the game with six kills.

UIW (1-12)

The Cardinals have played three matches in five days. Their most recent game, Monday night, was a hard-fought battle against Northwestern State that lasted three sets.

Palmi still leads the teams in kills with 114 for the season. Alvarez (76) and Risa Sena (74) are creeping right behind her. In most reason games, other student-athletes have also stepped up to bigger roles for the team. Jacqueline Arrington and Kyla Malone have been put into the mix as go-to players for UIW on the offensive side. Finley Evans has been consistent during the year averaging almost two kills a set. Defensively, Mariela Nieto has been cleaning up for the Cardinals. With 119 kills to her name Nieto has become a defensive force.
