Football Looks to Remain Undefeated, Travels to PVAMU

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team looks to remain undefeated heading into week three as they travel to Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) for a 6 p.m. CT matchup on Saturday, September 17.
 
UIW
  • Started the season 2-0 with two big wins over Southern Illinois University (64-29) and the University of Nevada (55-41). The Cardinals are now sitting at No. 6 in the FCS Stats Perform Poll, the highest ranking in program history.
  • UIW tops the Southland Conference (SLC) standings as the only team to remain undefeated heading into week three.
  • The Cardinals are the second-highest scoring offense in the nation (59.5 ppg).
  • Darion Chafin was crowned the SLC Offensive Player of the Week after shattering the UIW single-game record with 262 receiving yards against Nevada.
  • Chris Whittaker collected four sacks against Nevada to crush the single-game record and edge closer to the season record (8.5). He was named the SLC Defensive Player of the Week as he recorded the most sacks in a game by a Southland player against an FBS team.
 
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
  • PVAMU is 1-1 on the season with a home-opener win over Texas Southern (40-23) and a road loss at Abilene Christian (13-21) last weekend.
  • The Panthers were picked to finish third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) West division.
  • Quarterback Trazon Connley leads the team in rushing and passing, totaling three touchdowns on the season. Connley is 22-44-1 off 249 yards. He averages 79 rushing yards per game.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • The Cardinals and Panthers have seen each other twice in program history. UIW defeated PVAMU, 40-9, last season at Benson Stadium on September 11, 2021.
  • The Panthers won, 42-28, at Benson Stadium on November 16, 2017.

  • Chafin is the FCS national leader in receiving with 184 yards per contest and receiving yards with 368 total.
  • Lindsey Scott Jr. ranks second in the nation in passing yards per game (398.5), leading the Cardinals as the nation's top passing offense at 428.5 yards per game.
  • Linebacker Kelechi Anyalebechi is 18 total tackles away from holding the career record.
  • Whittaker is 2.5 sacks away from tying the season record.
