NEW ORLEANS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell 9-8 in 11 innings to the University of New Orleans (UNO) on Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.
Four balls left the park with homers from Alec Carr, Wilson Ehrhardt (two) and Daniel Calabrese. Carr led the Cardinals with three hits, while Ehrhardt finished with three RBIs.
UNO struck first in the second frame as a Privateer snuck home off a ground out to the six hole (1-0).
In the top of the third, the Privateer pitching staff led off the inning, walking Calabrese. Ridge Rogers and Carr singled to load the bases and Grant Smith was hit by a pitch to bring Calabrese home. Roberto Gonzalez was then walked to plate Rogers and Carr scored off a sacrifice fly from Nixon Brannan (3-1).
UNO tied the game up, 3-3, in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. The Privateers tacked on another run in the fourth to take the lead (4-3) before jumping to a 7-3 advantage late in the sixth frame.
Two Cardinal solo homers from Carr and Ehrhardt cut the Privateer edge to 7-5 in the seventh.
UNO scored once more in the seventh and Calabrese belted a homer to left field in the eighth to bring the score to 8-6.
Smith led off the ninth with a walk before Ehrhardt's home run leveled the game, 8-8.
UNO walked off in the eleventh inning to win the game, 9-8.
