WACO, Texas –The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team took a break from Southland Conference play with a midweek matchup at Baylor University on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals fell late to the Bears, 8-7.
Carson Rollins pitched six innings for the Cardinals, allowing only six hits and three runs.
Just four batters into the game,
Roberto Gonzalez belted an early two-RBI home run to take a 2-0 UIW advantage.
Baylor added a one to the board in the second inning off a ground out and another in the third on a double to level the game, 2-2.
Alec Carr singled through the left side in the top of the fifth to plate
Ridge Rogers and reclaim the UIW lead. In the sixth, three Cardinals were walked to load the bases, then
Nixon Brannan blew open the game with a grand slam to left center (7-2).
Three runs from the Bears cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh frame. Baylor brought in another three runs off a double in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-7 edge and ultimately won the game.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel to Houston Baptist University for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT on Friday, April 29, at Husky Field.
