SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team swept a doubleheader over the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) after securing two wins on Saturday at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. UIW won game one, 7-1, and game two, 9-3, over the Mavericks.
The Cardinals registered 21 hits on the day.
Ridge Rogers,
Alec Carr and
Hernan Yanez had three hits apiece. Rogers and
Taylor Darden each finished with three RBIs.
Michael Garza won game one after pitching seven innings with seven strikeouts, allowing two hits and one run.
Larry Westall closed the game with two hits through two innings.
Game One (7-1)
Keaton Grady dropped the ball just outside the left field wall for a solo homer to start off the bottom of the third (1-0). Carr stepped to the plate with
Grant Smith and
Roberto Gonzalez on second and third, smacking a double to right center to bring Smith home and tack another run to the board (2-0).
The Cardinals capitalized on UTA's errors in the fifth frame, scoring three unearned runs while bringing in two earned runs to jump to a 7-0 edge.
UTA reached home on a Cardinal miscue in the top of the seventh to add one run to the board, but UIW took the first game, 7-1.
Game Two (9-3)
UIW started game two with a 2-0 advantage as the Cardinal bats warmed up the cold night cap. Yanez hit an RBI double to left center (1-0). After he advanced to third on a ground out, he scored on Carr's single to shortstop.
UTA added three runs in the bottom of the second to take a one run lead (3-2), but UIW quickly regained the edge. Brannan scored on a Maverick error before Rogers hit a 3-RBI homer to right field as the Cardinals found themselves with a 6-3 cushion to end the second.
In the bottom of the third,
Reid Hensley blasted a hit over the right center wall for his first collegiate home run, bringing home Brannan to give the Cardinals an 8-3 advantage.
Taylor Darden picked up an RBI triple in the fourth (9-3) and
Kaddin Mikulik struck out the last batter swinging to win the second game, 9-3.
