SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team dropped a 47-43 back-and-forth matchup against Nicholls State University on Thursday night at the McDermott Center. The game featured six ties and nine lead changes; neither team led by more than six points at any time.
 
Jaaucklyn Moore led the Cardinals with 20 points, including going 5-6 from the free throw line. Hannah Wheeler stepped up in the fourth quarter and added nine points, all of which were 3-pointers.
 
Moore drained a 3-pointer to kick the game off for the Cardinals. The contest then went back and forth as the two teams traded baskets until Destiny Terrell's layup and Moore made two from the charity stripe to give UIW a 10-6 advantage. The Cardinals kept fighting and ended the quarter ahead, 12-8. Nicholls drew even with UIW, 12-12, to start the second frame before taking the lead. The Colonels held a 17-14 advantage going into the locker room.
 
UIW started the third quarter on a mission, using a 6-0 run – with four points from Moore and a basket by Jaimie Means – to jump ahead, 20-17. The teams traded points until Moore's back-to-back layups put the Cardinals up, 27-24. Nicholls scored another bucket, but UIW held a 27-26 advantage heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter was just as tight, but Nicholls held on to clinch the win, 47-43.
