SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team scored 29 points in the first quarter against the University of New Orleans (UNO) to fuel the 54-49 win Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
Jaaucklyn Moore led the team in scoring with 19 points.
Destiny Terrell finished with a double-double, contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals opened up the game on a 14-5 run to end the first quarter with a 29-7 advantage while shooting 73 percent from the field. UNO battled back, breaking UIW's full court press to finish 12 points in the paint and cut the lead to 33-22 heading into the second half.
With five minutes left in the third, the Privateers cut the lead to seven (37-30). Terrell,
Kamryn Gibson and Moore attacked the paint in transition to put the Cardinals ahead by 12 (43-31). UIW maintained the advantage to finish out the third quarter up 45-37.
A pair of Privateer free throws put UNO within three points (50-47) with two minutes left in the game. With the Cardinals in the bonus, Moore hit one free throw and Omozee picked up a crucial offensive board after the second attempt. She found Terrell, but UNO quickly fouled. Terrell drained both shots from the charity stripe to put UIW up, 53-47. The Cardinals beat the Privateers, 54-49.
