Football returns to Louisiana to take on Nicholls

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Incarnate Word football team travels to Louisiana to take on Nicholls on Saturday, October 15 at 3 pm after two weeks at home. This will be a non-conference matchup between the Colonels and Cardinals.

  • UIW is ranked No. 8 in the Stats Perform FCS Poll. and No. 10 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
  • Lindsey Scott Jr. was named NCAA FCS Player of the Week, Southland Offensive Player of the Week and FedEx Ground FCS National Offensive Player of the Week.
  • The Cardinals rank second in the nation for total offense with 3,318 yards this season.
 
SCOUTING THE COLONELS
 
  • Nicholls was picked to finish third in the 2022 Southland Preseason Poll.
  • The Colonels have started the season 1-5, coming off their first win over Houston Christian 19-17.
  • Kicker, Gavin Lasseigne, was named FedEx Ground FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week after making four field goals last week.
  • Linebacker, Alex Villavaso, was named Southland Defensive Player of the Week after recording two sacks and one forced fumble last week.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
 
  • Nicholls leads the Cardinals in the all-time series 5-4. UIW has won the last two matchups.
  • Last season UIW defeated the Colonels 38-21.
 
UIW PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
  • Scott set a UIW single-game record for the highest passing efficiency for the third time this season (306.9). Scott leads the nation in passing efficiency (213.0) and points responsible per game (33.0). He also leads the Southland Conference in total offensive touchdowns (32), passing yards (2,179), and completions (143). Nationally, Scott is second in passing yards per game with 363.17,
  • Darion Chafin sits second in the Southland for both total (574) and per game (95.67) receiving yards. He is ranked third in the conference for receiving touchdowns with six.
  • Taylor Grimes is currently second in the conference for receiving touchdowns (8) and third in receiving yards (517).
  • Running back Marcus Cooper is third in the Southland with three rushing touchdowns.
  • Chris Whittaker ranks fourth nationally with 1.25 sacks per game.
