Box Score HAMMOND, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team fell to Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), 78-68, on Saturday evening at the University Center.
Robert "RJ" Glasper led the Cardinals on the offensive end, registering another 22-point performance.
Johnny Hughes III followed with a season-best 21 points, nine rebounds and one block.
SLU came out to start the game with a 7-0 scoring run before the Cardinals began to battle back. The Cardinals stayed within five points of the Lions for the rest of the frame. Glasper heated up, draining six 3-pointers as he scored 17 points just in the first half. Hughes III continued to show his strength at the rim with back-to-back plays to give UIW the lead, 22-21. Then, at the buzzer, Hughes III knocked down a three to put the Cardinals ahead, 39-38, at halftime.
UIW came out of the break strong, again being led by Glasper and Hughes III. Mid-way through the second half,
Charlie Yoder and
Bradley Akhile heated up to help UIW to inch closer to the Lions. Yoder had back-to-back three-point plays to keep the Cardinals within reach of the Lions, while Akhile snuck behind the Lion defense for an easy basket to bring UIW within two points. Hughes III ended his night with a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game. SLU then locked in and went on its own scoring run to secure the victory, 78-68.
