SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team has set its 2022 schedule, announced head coach G.J. Kinne on Wednesday. This is the first season the Cardinals will compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
 
The Cardinals -- coming off a historic season with a 6-0 record at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, the first outright Southland Conference Championship and a trip to the second round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs -- open the season at home against Southern Illinois University on Sept. 3.
 
"I'm excited to get started," said Head Coach G.J. Kinne, who is in his first season at the helm of UIW football. "We have an exciting offseason ahead as we prepare for competition in the WAC, and our players and coaches welcome the challenge. While our conference affiliation is changing, our goals are not: UIW Football remains focused on competing for conference championships and making playoff runs. I'm looking forward to working with our players and staff to give fans a team they will be proud of."
 
UIW continues non-conference play on the road, traveling to the University of Nevada and Prairie View A&M University.
 
The WAC season begins when the Cardinals face familiar foe, and reigning WAC champion, Sam Houston State University on Sept. 24 at Benson Stadium. UIW hosts three other conference games in 2022, including matchups against Abilene Christian University, Lamar University and Utah Tech (currently Dixie State University until July 1, 2022).
 
UIW also travels to Stephen F. Austin State University, Nicholls State University, Tarleton State University and Southern Utah University to complete WAC play. Of these road matchups, three are against teams who had winning records in 2021(SFA, Nicholls, Tarleton). SFA also earned a berth in the 2021 FCS Playoffs, losing in the first round to the Cardinals.

Fans can enhance their game day experience by joining the Cardinals Club for the 2022 season. Join the Cardinals Club at $250 or more and designate football as the primary sport to receive access to a special VIP hospitality area. At this level, fans receive four hospitality passes and convenient Cardinals Club season parking.  Cardinals Club VIP hospitality tent amenities include: 

• Individually packaged meals 
• Shaded seats with a sideline viewing experience
• Drink service consisting of bottled water, soda, beer and wine.
