Ehrhardt and Koerner homer in series finale at Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – Wilson Ehrhardt and Trent Koerner both hit home runs for University of the Incarnate Word baseball, but it was not enough in a back-and-forth series finale as Nicholls came away with a 7-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.

Lee Thomas and Ryan Flores both had two hits on the afternoon as Ehrhardt finished with two RBIs and Koerner scored twice for the red and black.

Nicholls got on the board first with two RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning. UIW responded with three runs in the top of the second to gain the lead.

Zach Limas singled down the left-field line and Chance Medina walked to put two on with one out in the second inning. Limas scored on an error on the next play with Koerner hitting a ground ball up the middle that was misplayed by the Colonel defense trying to complete a double play. Ehrhardt made Nicholls pay for their mistake with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give UIW its first lead of the afternoon.

The Colonels went back out front with two runs in the third and a run in the fourth for a 5-3 lead. UIW chipped away with a run in the fifth with a sac fly from Jordan McFarland to easily score Grant Smith who singled to start the inning.

Nicholls added another run in the sixth inning with a single and an RBI double before Korner got ahold of a fastball for his first career Cardinal home run over the left-field fence in the seventh inning to get UIW back within one, 6-5.

The Colonels struck again in the eighth inning to get a run across for the 7-5 lead.

UIW looked to jump on the opportunity of an extended outing from Nicholls closer, Joe Taylor, by getting runners on in the eighth and ninth innings but were not able to size up the timely hit.
