Cardinals’ playoff berth on the line in season finale against Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – Coming off of a four-game Southland Conference series sweep of Houston Baptist on May 7-9, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team wraps up the regular season with a four-game home series against Lamar beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday, May 20 at 2 p.m. at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.   

With five teams already clinching a spot in the SLC postseason, the final three spots are open for the taking as UIW looks to make one final push in the eight-team Southland Conference Baseball Tournament set for Wednesday May 26, in Hammond, La.     

Winners of six of their last seven games and entering their last weekend series with momentum, the Cardinals sit just outside the playoff picture at ninth and one game behind in the conference standings among teams eligible to qualify.

UIW QUICK HITS    

  • The Cardinals (16-20, 20-25 SLC) are hitting .261 with five above a .250 average. Lee Thomas leads the way with a .318 average, Grant Smith (.305), Taylor Darden (.292), Ryan Flores (.287), Jordan McFarland (.277) and Ron Brown (.250) all above that mark.  
  • UIW is among the top of the Southland Conference in extra base hits – currently second in triples (16), third on home runs (38) and fifth in doubles (75) – combining for the third-best slugging percentage of .415.  
  • Smith leads the team with 53 hits, 37 RBIs, 35 runs scored and seven home runs. Wilson Ehrhardt and Thomas are tied with Smith for the team leading seven home runs and Thomas has collected 49 hits with five triples this season.  
  • UIW's pitching holds a 5.83 ERA and holding opponents to a .291 batting average with 337 total strikeouts.  
  • Michael McElmeel (3.18), Kayden Cassidy (3.57) and Aaron Celestino (3.91) lead the staff with ERAs below 4.00.  
  • Isaiah Zavala has a team-high five wins and two shutouts in 13 appearances and eight starts on the bump.  
  • Steve Hayward has a team-low .173 opponent batting average with just 13 hits and striking out 33 batters in a team-high 21 appearances and 23 innings. 
 HISTORY vs. LAMAR    
UIW is 5-7 all-time against Lamar. UIW claimed the last two games of a three-game set in 2018 and look to keep the winning momentum going this weekend.  

SCOUTING LAMAR   
  • Lamar (22-20, 14-18 SLC) comes in with the league's second batting average (.282) and fourth in slugging percentage (.409) one spot behind UIW.  
  • The Beaumont pitching staff leads the conference with a 3.80 ERA and second with a .236 opponent batting average.  
  • Chase Kemp and Anthony Quirion are tied for fourth in the league with 10 home runs and lead Lamar with 25 runs scored each.  
  • Ben MacNaughton leads the offense with a .345 batting average as Avery George (.329), Kemp (.289), Reese Durand (.284), Quirion (.278) and Ryan Snell (.265) are all above a .250 average.  
  • George leads all hitters with 57 hits and 28 runs scored.  
  • Trevin Michael and Zach Bravo both lead Lamar pitching with 5-2 records and 10 starts. Michael has a 3.26 ERA and limiting opponents to a .230 batting average as Bravo sits at 3.40 ERA and .227 opponent batting average.  
  • Jack Dallas has a team-high 17 relief appearances, holding a 2.36 ERA and 26 Ks in 26 2/3 inning.

UIW and Lamar regroup for a Friday 1 p.m. start with Senior Day activities to follow.  The Cardinals programs cap the regular season with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.
