SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped both games in the Saturday doubleheader against New Orleans at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Privateers took game one, 13-5, and game two, 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Cardinals' defense got to work early in the first inning when the Privateers loaded the bases with two outs, but a ground ball to Zach Limas at second would end the UNO scoring threat.
UNO struck first in the top of the third with three runs on a UIW error and a couple of Privateer singles.
Ron Brown got the Cardinals' offense going in the bottom half of the third inning with a blast over the left-field wall to cut the UNO lead to two. Wilson Ehrhardt followed it up with a home run of his own over the right-field wall and the Cardinals were within one run.
The Privateers struck again in the top half of the fourth with two more runs.
At the top of the sixth UNO added five more runs to take a 10-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Limas started the bottom half of the inning with a double to left-center. Ehrhardt with an infield single put runners on the corners for the Cardinals. Grant Smith hit a sac fly to deep center field to score Limas from third making the score 10-3. Lee Thomas had a ground-rule double and runners were at second and third for left fielder Jordan McFarland. McFarland hit a sac fly to right field to score Ehrhardt from third. At the end of the inning, UIW closed the UNO lead to 10-4.
New Orleans added three more runs off of a home run in the top of the seventh.
Ridge Rogers homered over the right-field wall in the bottom half of the seventh, and final inning, to cut the lead to eight as the Privateers held on for a 13-5 win of game one.
Game 2
UIW was off to a fast start in game two of the doubleheader when Noah Brewer hit his first collegiate home run to left field to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead after two innings.
The Privateers answered back in the top of the third with two runs, adding another in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 2-1.
Rogers reached in the bottom half of the fourth on a UNO defensive error, then Brown reached on a walk, but the Privateers halted the offensive threat.
At the bottom of the fifth, Trent Koerner drew the four-pitch walk to kickstart the offense. Thomas was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game so that there were runners on first and second with two outs to go. A hustling play by the UNO right fielder ended the inning.
The game went scoreless and hitless for three innings heading into the bottom of the ninth.
With the Cardinals at-bat, Rogers drew the walk to put a runner on first. Brown ended the UIW hitting drought with a single to right field as there were runners on first and second with one out.
