Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cardinals close out regular season against Wildcats, fall 64-55

ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore guard, Destiny Jenkins, had a career game as the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell, 64-55, on Saturday afternoon against Abilene Christian in the regular-season finale.

Jenkins led the Cardinals with a career-high 19 points and five made 3-pointers, going 5-for-11 from a distance. The sophomore also recorded four rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block on the game. Junior Starr Omozee contributed 11 points making 5-of-6 from the field.

UIW quickly got ahead off of Jenkins' hot hand going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to lead the Cardinals with nine points. UIW held a five-point lead, 15-10, but ACU closed in off a pair of free throws and a bucket in the paint, to trim the lead 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats wasted no time getting ahead in the second quarter making back-to-back threes to get ahead, 20-17. Jaaucklyn Moore's first points of the game came right on time to tie the game up, 20-20. Shortly after Jenkins tied a career-high four made 3-pointers in the first half to pull UIW ahead, 23-20.

The Cardinals struggled near the end of the first half as they went on a scoring drought while the Wildcats closed the half on an eight-point run to get ahead.

UIW started the third quarter with a bucket in the paint by Omozee, but ACU responded on the following possession. The Cardinals managed to make it a one-point game off another shot by Omozee in the paint, one from Jenkins and a pair of free throws by Kara Speer with 6:32 to go.

Shortly after the Cardinals went cold in scoring as the Wildcats broke out on a 10-7 run and led, 42-37, heading into the final stretch.

Once again, UIW pulled to within a one-possession game as Myra Bell put one away to be followed up by a three from Brittney Stafford to make the score, 44-42.

UIW turned to the hot hand, Jenkins with 2:21left in the game, as she knocked down a three to make it a one-point game yet again.

Jaaucklyn Moore closed out scoring for UIW grabbing an offensive board quickly turning around to sink a nothing but net three, but it was not enough as ACU won, 64-55.

QUOTING COACH DOW
"We gave ourselves a chance to only be down one with just over two minutes left in the game but then they knocked down a huge three to push it to four. Unfortunately, our next three trips up the floor we came up empty on the offensive end. We did a much better job offensively in the second half of going to the offensive boards and getting to the free-throw line. In the first half, we had zero free attempts and only three offensive rebounds. While it was great to see Destiny Jenkins shoot it as well as she did in the first half we need to see more balanced scoring. We know we're capable of playing better in all three areas...defensively, offensively and on the boards. I would anticipate Wednesday's rematch will come down to the final minutes again."
