UIW blows game open in second half win against Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is undefeated on the road and the season following a, 42-20, win on Saturday afternoon against Lamar.

With the win, UIW (2-0, 2-0 SLC) tied up the all-time series against Lamar (0-2, 0-2 SLC).

Lamar opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass with 9:17 on the clock. UIW turned around and quickly answered with a touchdown of its own in three plays, when senior running back Kevin Brown took off on a 66-yard run for a touchdown to tie up the score, 7-7.

Toward the end of the first quarter, Cameron Ward connected with Brown off a 20-yard cross-field pass in the endzone. The San Antonio Cardinals pulled ahead heading into the second quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Lamar capped off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a touchdown to even up the score, 14-14. The Lamar Cardinals then jumped ahead off a 49-yard field goal by Bailey Griffen, 17-14.

With 1:40 remaining in the first half, Ward found Darion Chafin in the endzone to pull UIW ahead, 21-17.

UIW received the ball to start off the second half. Brown rushed for 33 yards to get the Cardinals in the red zone. Ward capped off the drive by bouncing off the tackle and scoring a one-yard touchdown.

Lamar's final points of the game came in their sole possession of the third quarter when Bailey Griffen put away a 46-yard field goal. Kelechi Anyalebechi had a perfectly timed pass breakup in the endzone two plays prior, that forced the Lamar field goal.

Ward connected with Robert Ferrel in the endzone with 35 seconds to go in the third quarter and UIW led, 35-20, heading into the final stretch.

The defense helped lock in the Lamar Cardinals with Jerick Pitre's sack to force a turnover on downs, and Maverick McCaskill's fumble recovery.

The freshman quarterback capped off the win with his fourth touchdown pass when he hit a wide-open Jaelin Campbell with 7:29 to go in the game. The touchdown was iced by Carson Mohr's made PAT, bring his tally to 6-for-6 on the day.

Shawn Holton picked off the Lamar quarterback on its final drive to prevent any further scoring, for a 42-20 UIW win.
