Football endures first loss in high-scoring game against Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word football team suffered its first loss of the season on the road, 75-45, against Nicholls on Saturday afternoon.

UIW and Nicholls went blow-for-blow offensively with two touchdowns apiece in the first ten minutes of the game.

The Colonels were on the board first, 2:04 into the game, when Lindsey Scott hit Dontaze Costly on a 22-yard pass.

The Cardinals tied the game when Cameron Ward threw a four-yard pass to Mark Sullivan, but Nicholls responded in just under two minutes with a 48-yard pass from Lindsey to Costly to get ahead, 14-7.

Less than two minutes after that, Ward threw a side-arm pass to Kevin Brown who took off and dodged past two Nicholls defenders on his way to the endzone to tie up the score once again. Still, Nicholls snuck in another touchdown but missed the extra point as time expired in the first quarter.

Carson Mohr made his first field goal of the season, a 26-yarder, to pull UIW to within three, 17-20, but immediately after, Nicholls' Costly scored for the third time returning a kickoff for 90 yards and the score.

Down 27-17, UIW scored on the following drive as Ward found Robert Ferrel to cut into the Colonels' lead.

Nicholls' defense got the Colonels the ball back with an interception and the offense wasted no time extending their lead, zooming up the field in just 51 seconds, off three plays, including a 32-yard rush and a 29-yard pass to pull ahead, 34-24.

The Colonels continued to extend their lead scoring three more touchdowns in the first half for a 55-24 lead at the break and came out of the locker room tallying on another two and a field goal for its largest lead of the game, 68-24.

UIW broke the Nicholls scoring streak with 2:27 to go in the third quarter as Ward launched one to Jayden Jones who endured a Nicholls tackler for 10 yards dragging him into the endzone.

Following a short drive by the Colonels to start the fourth quarter, the Cardinals offense got the ball back that resulted in Ward passing it to Ferrel for the second time of the day to make the score, 68-37.

UIW's final points of the game happened when Ward made a 23-yard pass to Kaleb Ducros, for the touchdown and followed it up with a toss to Ferrel for the two-point conversion. Nicholls iced the game with a touchdown for a final score of, 75-45.
