Volleyball’s return to McDermott results in favorable 3-1 victory over Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – Returning from a six-game road trip, the University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team was glad to be back home, and it showed in its 3-1 victory against Lamar on Thursday night inside the McDermott Center.

Bethany Clapp led the way with 19 kills followed by Chase Jackson's 12. Defensively Macy Sumrall notched 18 digs and Annamarie Alvarez was huge at the net with six block assists.

Despite Lamar's first points in the set for an early 3-1 lead, UIW quickly responded taking the lead and holding it for the rest of the first set for a score of 24-12.

The Cardinals took the second set, but not without some resistance from Lamar. There were four lead changes and seven tied scores through the early portion of the set as it was a back-and-forth battle. With the score tied at 11-11, Natalie Martin got UIW going with a service ace and big looks by Clapp and Jackson on the following rallies.

Lamar challenged UIW's lead in the third set conceding no ties or leads. Late into the set, the Cardinals were down 21-13, but they attempted a comeback a 6-1 run capped off by a service ace by Pilar Gonzaba and a kill by Alvarez. The Beaumont Cardinals held on forcing the game into set four.

Clapp and Alvarez secured the crucial four points after the final timeout was called by UIW. Gonzaba quickly set Clapp up for the kill, which she then followed up with a service ace. Alvarez who was waiting at the net for the attack went up into the air putting it back into Lamar's side of the court, forcing them to call a timeout.

After the break, Macy Sumrall set Alvarez up for another kill to put the score at 24-21. Taylor Henderson and Allison Palmi read the Lamar offense perfectly, jumping up in sync to block an attack by Malaysia Murdock and win the match.
