SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Taylor Darden led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI and a run scored as The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team came back for a 5-3 victory in the final game of the series against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon, March 21, at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Darden got UIW across the plate first in the bottom of the second inning after he singled up the middle and moved to third in a failed pickoff attempt. Ridge Rogers grounded out to second to score Darden.
But it was the Lions playing with a 2-1 lead after scoring in both the top of the third and fourth innings. Nick Ray doubled to left field and later scored on an Evan Keller single to center. SLU added another run in the fourth off a sac fly from Cameron Artigues that scored Peyton Faulkner who started the inning on a walk.
The Cardinals tied it, 2-2, in the sixth inning after Lee Thomas got on base with a hit-by-pitch and motored around the bases on a deep centerfield double off the bat of Darden.
SLU responded in the top of the seventh with a Tyler Finke triple to right field and scoring in the next at-bat off a single to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.
UIW pulled back out front in the eighth inning when Jordan McFarland, Lee Thomas and Ryan Flores strung together three doubles. Flores advanced on a Darden ground out and later scored as Limas ripped an RBI single to right field and the Cardinals put the Lions on their heels in the top of the ninth inning, leading 5-3.
Michael Garza came on to pitch in the ninth, getting two strikeouts and a game-ending ground out to Smith at shortstop who flipped it over to Limas as UIW (8-5, 5-3 SLC) claimed the series win over Southeastern Louisiana (12-8, 5-3 SLC).
