UIW set to travel for mid-week matchup at Texas A&M

SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a season-opening series sweep of Texas Southern at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team is on the road for the first time this season to take on Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.  

The Cardinals have accounted for 41 runs in three games this season behind first baseman Ryan Flores who leads the nation in RBI average at 3.67 RBIs per game. UIW also takes the nation's highest batting average (.356), on-base percentage (.507), and scoring average (13.7 runs per game) to College Station, Texas.  

Junior Michael Garza will get the start after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings on Friday night, recording six strikeouts to earn the save in the first game of the season.

UIW QUICK HITS  

  • The Cardinals did not show any sign of rust, scoring 41 runs in the opening series after being away from game action for more than 11 months.  
  • Carson Rollins, Michael McElmeel and Michael Garza lead the pitching staff with six strikeouts each.  
  • Along with leading the nation in RBIs per game, Flores ranks in the top-10 in batting average (.583), hits per game (2.33), and on-base percentage (.667).  
  • Grant Smith and Lee Thomas are also ranked in the nation's top 50 in hits per game, both at 1.67 and both have an on-base percentage of .571.  

HISTORY vs. TEXAS A&M  

  • UIW is 1-4 all-time against Texas A&M, all played in College Station.  
  • The Cardinals look to top the Aggies for the first time since winning, 6-5, on Feb. 27, 2019.  
  • UIW and Texas A&M will have family bragging rights on the line. UIW freshman pitcher Derek Saenz's older brother Dustin Saenz pitches for the Aggies. Derek has not made an appearance this season for the Cardinals, Dustin is 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched.    

SCOUTING THE AGGIES  

  • Texas A&M is 4-4 this season and holds a 2-3 record inside Blue Bell Park.  
  • The Aggies dropped a 6-5 decision to Southland Conference member Abilene Christian on Feb. 23.  
  • Sophomore lefty, Chris Weber is getting the starting nod for the Aggies. Weber has made one appearance with 3.1 innings pitched this season.  
  • Will Frizzell leads the Texas A&M offense hitting .387 with 12 hits including four home runs, three doubles, seven RBIs and eight runs scored.  
  • Bryce Blaum, Austin Bost and Brett Minnich all hold a batting average above .300.    

ON DECK 
The Cardinals host Houston on Wednesday, March 10. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. UIW head coach Ryan Shotzberger spent eight seasons with the Cougars prior to coming to UIW last season.
