SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell, 59-48, on Monday evening in the McDermott Center against Lamar.
Destiny Jenkins and Destiny Terrell led the team with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
After both teams got off to a slow start, Lamar opened scoring three minutes into the game with a jumper. UIW tied the score four times before taking the lead off six points by Terrell, with the score, 15-12, after the first ten minutes.
The Cardinals held on to the lead throughout the second quarter. Lamar worked to get within two after the media timeout, but not before UIW took off on a 5-0 run to get its largest lead of the game, 29-22.
Terrell led UIW in the first half scoring 10 points in 10 minutes of play. UIW went into the break with a, 29-25 lead.
Lamar wasted no time in the second half as it quickly got its first lead in the game off a jumper in the paint followed by a 3-pointer on the next possession and carried it for the remainder of the game.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in almost three minutes. Shortly after the media timeout, LU broke out on a 14-1 run to get ahead, 44-32. The Beaumont Cardinals outscored the San Antonio Cardinals 19-7 in the third period to get ahead off 70 percent shooting from the field.
Jenkins kept the Cardinals alive with nine points in the final stretch to get within four, but Lamar powered through the final two minutes of the game to extend its lead to win 59-48.
QUOTING COACH DOW
"It was a very disappointing second half especially after going into the locker room being up by four, and then going out and getting outscored 19 to six in the third quarter. Clearly, they were hot shooting 70% in the quarter. We have to find a way to shoot better than seven percent. We didn't make free throws and we ended the game at 50 percent from the free-throw line."
"We've emphasized to the team that we have struggled to get to 50 of late and there is no margin for error. Since we're struggling to make shots, we have to be almost perfect on the defensive end and on offensive boards. We didn't take a single charge and that was a toughness category for us that we didn't win tonight either."
"On to Houston Baptist. We're getting to the point where we don't control our own destiny, so we have to be ready to play on Wednesday."
