UIW Defeats Grambling State University

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word defeated the Tigers of Grambling State University (GSU), 72-62, on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

With his second double-double of the season, Johnny Hughes III led the Cardinals with 10 rebounds and 14 points against the Tigers. Robert "RJ" Glasper had a team-best 21 points. UIW had four student-athletes with double-digit points against GSU – Glasper (21), Hughes (14), Josh Morgan (13), and Benjamin Griscti (12). Drew Lutz led the Cardinals at the free-throw line, going 7-8 on the day. Griscti ended the day with four 3-pointers, three of which came in the second half.

Hughes III got the Cardinals started with a hard drive to the basket for their first points of the day. Glasper led UIW in the first half with 13 points, while Hughes fought on the defensive end to lead the Cardinals on the board with nine rebounds. Glasper sparked UIW's offense with a three from the top of the key, putting UIW ahead, 21-8. Lutz remained perfect at the free throw line in the first half, sinking four. Morgan entered the game and immediately added to the explosive offense that continued through the half; he ended the frame draining a corner 3-pointer to extend the Cardinal lead to 37-19.

Griscti started UIW off in the second half with back-to-back treys. With his eighth defensive rebound on the day, Hughes secured his double-double with 11 minutes left in the game to help spark the team. The Cardinals drained six free throws in the home stretch to secure the victory, 72-62.

"I was happy for the fellas. They really got after it defensively and it led to a strong offense. Grambling is a tough out. They're very well-coached and dangerous. We are grateful for the win and will learn from this one and get ready for the next battle," said head coach Dr. Carson Cunningham.
