CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word Cross Country team competed in the 2021 Southland Conference (SLC) Cross Country Championship on Friday, October 29.Â

Senior
Abby Gray took first place in the women's 6k with a time of 21:30.39. Following the race, Gray was named Newcomer of the Year and Athlete of the Year, as well as being named to the Southland Conference first team. During the regular season, Gray led the Cardinals in three separate meets and was twice named Southland Athlete of the Week.
Ozlynn Urias was named Freshman of the Year and sophomore Maryn Demaio was named to the SLC third team. The women finished in fourth place.

Armando Villarreal placed eighth in the men's 8k with a time of 25:01.29 to help the Cardinals secure a second-place finish. Villarreal and
Griffin Neal were named to the SLC second team, and
Christopher Daniels made the third team.

Fourteen UIW student-athletes will run in the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional qualifying race in Waco, Texas at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course on Friday, Nov. 12.
