SAN ANTONIO -- Despite a great effort, the University of the Incarnate Word women's cross country team fell four points short of the top spot, having to settle for second at the season-opening Sam Musgrave UIW Twilight, held at the Classics Elite Soccer Complete Tuesday.
Led by medalist Alexia Macias, who finished in 14:06.92, Texas State earned the win with 31 points while the Cardinals finished with 35. Trinity was in a distant third with 65 points.
UIW earned the second- and third-place spots, with
Emily Torres running a 14:17.37 and
Oceane Cercueil finishing in 14:25.22.
Just outside the top-five in sixth was
Sofia Cantor, who ran a 14:31.15.
Sophia Keiser (13th, 14:49.50) and
Pilar Rivaya-Figaredo (15th, 14:55.04) completed the scoring with
Lizi McGuire (23rd, 15:20.61) also finishing inside the top-25.
Tuesday marked the first of back-to-back home races the Cardinals will run to open the 2026 season. They will also host the UIW Invitational on Sept. 12, with this race being held at the Windcrest Golf Club.
Prior to Tuesday's event, UIW held a ceremony to honor former runner Sam Musgrave, who lost his life in a car accident over the summer. A story on the ceremony will run on uiwcardinals.com on Sept. 2.
