SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's cross country team placed second of 11 teams at the UIW Invitational on Saturday morning, doing so behind a team total of 76 points and a cumulative time of 45:04.11.

The Cardinals have now opened the season with back-to-back home meets, with Saturday's 5K taking place at Windcrest Golf Course.
 
Texas State (45 points) took home the team title, while UTSA Meryeme Mai (25:06) earning the individual crown.
 
Sophomore Emily Torres paced UIW on Saturday, turning in a personal best time of 17:38 to finish her day in seventh place. Fellow sophomore Sofia Cantor followed with a PR of her own, as her mark of 17:45 was good enough to land just inside the top ten.
 
The freshman duo of Pilar Rivaya (18:11, 15th place) and Maya Schular (18:19, 19th place) were next across the finish for the Cardinals, while senior Marie Vazeilles (18:32, 26th place) rounded out the team's scoring. As a team, UIW finished less than ten seconds behind first place, marking the Cardinals' best effort of the young season so far.
 
UIW will look to continue the early momentum on September 26, when they head to Lake Charles, La. to take part in the Southland Pre-Conference Meet.
