Cardinals host New Mexico and Sam Houston

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball returns to Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, after a weekend in Corpus Christi. This week's slate consists of a two-game midweek series against New Mexico and then a weekend series against SLC foe Sam Houston State.
 
THE GAMES
Tuesday, March 10 vs. New Mexico at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 11 vs. New Mexico at 6:30 p.m.
Friday, March 13 Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 14 Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, March 15 Sam Houston at 1 p.m.

HISTORY VS NEW MEXICO
  • This is the first meeting with New Mexico.
 
SCOUTING THE LOBOS
  • New Mexico comes into the series with one of the best records the Cardinals have seen so far this season as they sit at 12-4.
  • The Lobos have a lot of offensive fire power with  five players hitting over .320 and five players with at least 10 RBIs.
  • Utility Harry Fullerton has a slash line of .375/.478/.661 with a team-leading two home runs, six doubles and 18 runs scored.
HISTORY VS SAM HOUSTON STATE
  • Sam Houston holds a 14-2 record in the historical record against UIW.
  • The last meeting favored the Cardinals as they beat the Bearkats 3-2 in Huntsville on May 23, 2019.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARKATS
  • SHSU enters the weekend series with a 7-7 overall record and a 1-2 SLC record after playing HBU in their conference series opener.
  • The Bearkats are third in the conference with a team-ERA of 3.02.
  • The team is led by junior infielder Jack Rogers as he is fourth in the Southland with a .396 batting average. His slash line is .396/.450/.698 with one home run, three triples and 14 RBI.
 
HOT STREAKS
  • The catcher-first base duo of Kyle Bergeron and Ryan Flores are currently on 13-game reached base streaks.
  • Landon Etzel now has the longest hitting streak on the team at eight games.
 
AROUND THE CONFERENCE
  • The Cardinals are second in the conference in multiple offensive categories: batting average (.273), on base % (.397), walks (77) and RBI (92). They are third in slg % (.376) and runs (100).
  • UIW doesn't give out free bases often as they rank second in the conference with only 39 walks given up and have only committed eight errors on the season (.984 fielding %, 2nd in SLC).
  • Lee Thomas leads the Southland in on base % at .554 and walks (13). He's also currently fifth in the conference with a .396.
  • Ryan Flores is leading the conference with four sacrifice flies and is fifth in the conference with 14 RBI.
  • Aaron Celestino is second in the conference in victories with three wins.
 
IN THE NATION
  • Aaron Celestino is tied for second in the nation with three wins so far this season.
  • Lee Thomas is 21st in the country with a .554 OBP.
  • Ryan Flores already has four sacrifice flies, which puts him tied for second in the country.
  • As a team, the Cardinals rank 38th in Division I with a .397 OBP and sit at 46th with 77 walks.
  • UIW's 7.1 runs per game is also good for 46th in the NCAA.
