Baseball drops first contest of season, falls to Notre Dame

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to Notre Dame, 12-1, in its first loss of the season at Wolff Stadium on Friday night.
 
NOTABLES
  • Landon Etzel is currently on a four-game reached base streak.
  • Lee Thomas has reached base in the past 10 games dating back to the 2019 season. He has also had a hit in the last five games, dating back to last season.
  • Luke Taggart accumulated six strikeouts in five innings pitched against the Power 5 opponent.
  • Three pitchers got their first appearance as a Cardinal – freshmen Andrew Girod and Jackson Kiddy each rang up their first collegiate strikeout, while Quest Mock recorded his first strikeout as a Cardinal.
  • Pinch hitting in the top of the ninth, Landen Kimbro collected his first hit as a Cardinal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Irish scattered three runs across the first two innings to take a 3-0 lead, while Tommy Sheehan and the Notre Dame defense held the Cardinals scoreless on two hits. After a scoreless third inning, the Irish tacked on three more runs in the fourth and fifth frames to extend their lead to 6-0.
 
With two outs and two runners on base in the top of the sixth, Chance Medina hit a double to drive in Etzel and make the score 6-1, in favor of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish responded in the next two innings, scattering six runs across the sixth and seventh to broaden their lead to 12-1. Notre Dame shut out UIW in the last three innings to secure a 12-1 victory.

ON DECK
UIW plays Toledo on Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT) before closing out the tournament against crosstown rival UTSA on Sunday at 12 p.m. Both games are slated to be played at Wolff Stadium.
