Baseball falls in back-and-forth battle against Toledo

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell, 11-10, in an extra-inning, back-and-forth battle with Toledo on Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
 
NOTABLES
  • Landon Etzel is on a five-game reached base streak, getting on base in all five games since becoming a Cardinal. 
  • Etzel led UIW with a 2-for-6 outing, including two runs, two RBI, a double and a stolen base.
  • Three Cardinals have streaks dating back to the 2019 season – Ridge Rogers is on a seven-game hitting streak, Chance Medina is on a six-game reached base streak, and Lee Thomas is on a six-game hitting streak and an 11-game reached base streak.
  • Starting pitcher Isaiah Zavala recorded four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. 
  • All nine Cardinal batters reached base in today's matchup.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quiet first inning, Toledo drove in a run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. UIW responded in the bottom of the frame, taking the 2-1 advantage as Rogers smacked a single through the right side to drive in Drew Minter before scoring on an error. The Rockets knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. 
 
Toledo then tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth frame to take a 4-2 lead. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals were looking to rally. Etzel delivered as he singled to right field to drive in Minter and Rogers before scoring on wild pitch, making the score 5-4, in favor of UIW. 
 
The Rockets proceeded to knot the game up again at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals regained a 6-5 lead as Minter brought home Grady Davenport in the bottom of the frame. After a scoreless sixth inning, Toledo scattered four runs across the seventh and eighth frames to take a 9-6 advantage, but the Cardinals refused to go down without a fight. UIW responded in the bottom of the eighth, driving in four runs when Medina and Thomas both blasted two-RBI doubles down the left field line to out the Cardinals up, 10-9. 
 
The Rockets drove in a run to tie the game at 10-10 in the top of the ninth – and the Cardinals had a quiet bottom of the frame – to force the game into extra innings. Toledo drove in a run in the top of the 10th to take an 11-10 lead, giving UIW the chance to make the next move. Unfortunately, the Toledo defense shut down the Cardinals in order as the Rockets secured an 11-10 victory.
