Cardinals head to Lake Charles in search of season sweep over McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La.  – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team makes its final trip to Louisiana of the season to take on the McNeese Cowgirls at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the H&H Complex.

SERIES HISTORY
The Cardinals are 3-4 in head-to-head matchups with the Cowgirls, looking to sweep the series this season. UIW holds a two-game winning streak over McNeese, with the most recent 73-56 win at the McDermott Center (Jan. 15) led by Macy Ray's 16 points, who sank a season-high four 3-pointers.
 
UIW IN THE SOUTHLAND
UIW has maintained the fourth-best defense in the conference, limiting opponents to 59.7 points per game. UIW also has the No. 5 rebounding defense in the league, holding opponents to 36.8 per contest on the glass.
 
CARDINALS ON THE LEADERBOARDS
Senior guard Imani Robinson's 13.7 points per game leads the Cardinals and ranks seventh in the SLC. Meanwhile, her 41.1 percent accuracy from the field puts her among the top 20. Junior guard Kara Speer's 7.1 rebounds, 5.1 defensive boards are fifth on the Southland leaderboard. Seniors Robinson and Lunden Henry swat away 0.9 and 0.7 shots per game, respectively, putting them up among the top-15 for blocks in the conference. Victoria Jackson averages 1.8 steals per contest, putting her along with Robinson's 1.6 steals among the top 15 in the league.
 
THREAT FROM THREE
The Cardinals continue to thrive from 3-point range, shooting at 31.1 percent, which stands fifth in the league. They were especially strong over the last two games, shooting 46.2 percent against Sam Houston and 44.4 percent against Northwestern State - both of which resulted in wins. Angelica Wiggins made six 3-pointers against the Lady Demons, which is a single-game season high. Kara Speer is shooting 39.1 percent from beyond the arc, a team best that is sixth-best in the SLC.
 
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
  • McNeese (5-18, 2-12 SLC) currently sits at the bottom of league standings and looks to snap a five-game losing streak.
  • The Cowgirls are led by sophomore guard Callie Maddox, who is averaging 11.4 points per game. Damilola Balogun and Regan Bolton are also averaging double-figure points per game at 11.0.
  • Balogun, a 6-0 senior forward, is also crucial on the glass for McNeese as she brings down an average 9.9 rebounds per game, 7.3 defensive boards, the best in the Southland.
  • The Cowgirls rank fourth in the league for 3-point percentage at a rate of 32.5 percent, just above UIW's 31.1 percent. They are led by Bolton who averages 2.6 3-pointers per game at a 37.4 percent accuracy.
  • McNeese is averaging 64.7 points per game, which is fifth-best in the league, but allows the most points of Southland schools conceding 76.4 point per game.
