Cardinals fall, 84-59, to TCU in season opener on the road

FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team tipped off the 2020-21 season at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday afternoon, falling to TCU 84-59.

NOTABLES
The Cardinals were off to a strong start in the first quarter as they went shot-for-shot, tying the game four times. UIW eventually led at the end of the first quarter, 19-17, as the Cardinals displayed a well-rounded rotation with seven student-athletes contributing to the score, highlighted by 3-pointers from Brittney Stafford, Moore and Adams.

TCU opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take over the lead. UIW worked to get within striking distance off a 3-pointer by Moore that tied the game, 33-33. A turnaround jump shot in the paint by Adams in the finals seconds of the first half sent the teams to the locker rooms as TCU held the lead, 38-35.

Freshman Brenna Perez tied the game with a layup and an extra point, 38-38, just seven second into the third quarter. TCU powered out a 23-9 run in the third quarter, put on by a robust defense that forced 10 turnovers in the period.

UIW was unable to cut into TCU's 61-47 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Cardinals' nine additional turnovers in the fourth quarter diminished the shot opportunities as they ultimately fell 84-59.

QUOTING COACH DOW

"It really was a tale of two halves. In the first half we had 30 field goal attempts, made 47 percent of our shots and only turned it over 10 times. As a result we led after the quarter and we were only down by three at halftime. Unfortunately in the second half we turned it over 19 times and had zero offensive rebounds, which led to only getting 17 field goal attempts. Their size and length really bothered us in the second half which led to the huge disparities in points off turnovers (33-7) and points in the paint (60-16)."

"All things considered, given our youth and how few practices we've had, it was an encouraging performance for our first game. We had nine players playing in their first ever Division I game, and ten in a UIW uniform. And of course TCU won 22 games and was ranked 25th in the country last season."

UP NEXT
