SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell in the final seconds of the game to the Houston Baptist Huskies, 60-55, on Wednesday night at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals took the lead early in the first quarter off of six points by
Lunden Henry. The Huskies snatched the lead off a 3-pointer shortly after the media timeout and left the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the quarter.
HBU started the quarter on a 5-0 run to take an 11-point lead. A step-back jump shot by
Victoria Jackson helped cut the lead getting to within five. Despite UIW's attempt to cut the lead, HBU maintained a 35-25 advantage going into the break.
The Cardinals took the court with a different attitude as they got started by a three from
Kara Speer, who went on to score seven points in the quarter. Solid defense by the Cardinals forced the Huskies to turn it over five times, recording their lowest scoring quarter of the game.
HBU got ahead by as many as six points, but UIW responded by going on an 8-0 run to take the lead off a layup and an extra point by
Imani Robinson. The Huskies tied the game and made a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left on the clock and the Cardinals couldn't respond, ultimately falling 60-55.
