SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team opened its home slate with a 3-0 victory over Northern Illinois on Friday morning in the first match of the 2019 Cardinal Classic at the McDermott Convocation Center.

NOTABLES
- Julia Monday led the Cardinals with 11 kills and an astounding .579 attack percentage, while Carissa McGarity chipped in eight kills and a .538 attack percentage.
- Pilar Gonzaba had 26 assists, two aces and four digs, while Alyssa Carlin had 12 digs.
- As a team, the Cardinals registered a .311 attack percentage while limiting NIU to a .182 attack percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (27-25) | NIU took an early lead in a back-and-forth set that featured six ties and three lead changes. Ultimately, with the score knotted at 25-25,
Bethany Clapp came in clutch with an ace and Monday recorded a kill to clinch the 27-25 set win for UIW. Monday led all scorers with six kills.

SET 2 (25-18) | Much like the first set, the second set was tightly contested at the start, but with the score tied at 5-5, a Clapp kill gave the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish. UIW went on to win set two, 25-18.

SET 3 (25-13) | UIW won the first point and never looked back in set three, going on to capture a victory in dominating fashion with a score of 25-13. McGarity tallied five kills, while Monday had four.
